INSIDE STORY INK SERVICES AND RATES

Anyone who thinks it's easy to write a screenplay has never tried it. It is one of the most deceptively difficult forms to master. Having come this far is a major accomplishment. Congratulations!

But now, let's take it one step further. I am completely committed to helping you make absolutely sure the story you set out to tell is not only on the page, but realized there in its most enthralling, compelling and irresistible form.

HERE'S WHAT YOU GET:

A comprehensive overview of your script (or novel), first pointing out all its strengths, then zeroing in on the areas that need work. But don't worry, I will never point out a problem without offering not only several specific solutions, but also guidelines to help you craft your own solution, and avoid making the same mistake in the future.

But what good is an overview, unless you know exactly where each these problems are manifest, and how to remedy them in each specific instance? Because there is nothing more frustrating than knowing the problem exists, but being unsure exactly where, I will then provide a comprehensive page by page analysis, focusing on such things as:

  PLOT AND PREMISE:
•  Is the premise believable?
•  Is it fresh?
•  Does it have an internal logic that holds it together?
•  Are there credibility gaps?

  IS IT VISUAL?
•  The first rule of storytelling is show don't tell - and this is just as true for novels as for screenplays!
•  Does the story unfold visually?
•  Are the characters telling us what is going on, or are we seeing it for ourselves?

  THE CHARACTERS:
•  Are they believable?
•  Are they accessible?
•  Are they unique?
•  Can we feel what they are feeling?
•  Do we know enough about them to care?
•  What does each character want?
•  What are they willing/forced to risk in order to achieve their goal?
•  Is each change the character goes through earned?

  THE FORCE OF OPPOSITION:
•  Is your villain focused enough?
•  Is your villain strong enough?
•  Does he/she/it really put your hero to the test?

  STRUCTURE AND PACING:
•  Does each scene drive the story forward?
•  Does each scene arc?
•  Is there dramatic tension? Does it build?
•  Does each setup have a payoff?

  DIALOGUE:
•  Is the dialogue crisp?
•  Does each character have a distinct voice?
•  Does the dialogue resonate emotionally?
•  Is the dialogue brief?
•  Are there memorable lines that actors will want to be remembered for?

  MARKETABILITY:
•  How salable is it in today's market?
•  Is it so high budget that only a major studio could produce?
•  Can it be summed up in a logline?

One Final Piece Of Advice

Whether we work together or not, please, be absolutely, positively sure your screenplay is ready before you shop it. You only get one chance - period. Get as much feedback as you can first - and NOT from your friends, even the ones in the business. No matter how objective they say they are, they are either giving you the benefit of the doubt, or lying. This isn't to say that your script might not be absolutely great as is, but because you can't trust them to tell you if it's not, you need to run it past someone who first of all knows how to read a screenplay - it is a deceptively difficult skill - and who doesn't know you at all.

I look forward to working with you.

Quotes for authors
"To get it right, be born with luck or else make it. Never give up. Get the knack of getting people to help you and also pitch in yourself. A little money helps, but what really gets it right is to never--I repeat--never under any conditions face the facts. "
-- Ruth Gordon

"Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world. "
-- Albert Einstein

"I believe more in the scissors than I do in the pencil."

"Dear Editor, Why do you keep sending my stories back? You're supposed to print them and make me rich and famous. What is it with you????"
